ChatGPT exporter: what to look for before you install one

A ChatGPT exporter is only good if it still works next month

“ChatGPT exporter” covers two very different things: tools that read a live conversation on the page you are looking at, and tools that request a bulk archive through OpenAI’s account settings. They fail in different ways, and most buying advice blurs the two.

This page sets out what to check before you install anything—what gets captured, where the file is built, which formats come out, and whether the tool reaches the other AI sites you use. Then it shows the on-page route with ModelAny, which reads the conversation you already have open and builds the file in your browser.

Two kinds of exporter, two failure modes

Knowing which category a tool belongs to predicts almost everything else about it—its speed, its privacy profile, and how it breaks.

  • On-page exporters read the rendered conversation and write a file. They are immediate and work on the chat you are looking at, but they depend on the site’s current HTML—when ChatGPT changes its layout, an unmaintained exporter stops capturing turns until it is updated.
  • Account-data exporters ask the provider for everything at once. They survive layout changes because they use a documented data path, but they are slow (often a queue), they arrive as raw data rather than a formatted document, and they cover only the provider you requested.
  • A third, weaker category is the screenshot or print route: it always works and always looks wrong—page chrome, split tables, and no selectable structure.

What to check before you install one

  • What it captures: the whole thread, or only the turns currently rendered? Scroll to the top of a long chat before trusting an exporter.
  • Where the file is built: in your browser (nothing leaves the machine) or on the vendor’s server (your conversation is uploaded).
  • Formats: PDF and Word for sharing and archiving, Markdown for Notion/Obsidian/Git. A tool that only offers one format will not cover a whole workflow.
  • Speaker labels and code blocks: without them a transcript is not reusable, and code that lost its monospace formatting is worse than a screenshot.
  • Maintenance signal: when was it last updated, and does it publish a changelog? ChatGPT ships UI changes regularly.
  • Reach: if you also use Claude, Gemini or DeepSeek, check whether the same tool covers them or whether you need a second extension.

The on-page route with ModelAny

ModelAny adds a slim tab to the right edge of every supported AI site. Open the conversation, click the tab, and choose PDF, Word, Markdown or Copy. The file is generated in your browser and saved straight to your downloads folder—there is no ModelAny server in the path.

Because it reads the page you are on, it works the same way on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, Doubao, Qwen, GLM, Tencent Yuanbao and Wenxiaoyan. One tool, one workflow, every site in your rotation.

  1. Open the conversation and scroll to the top so the full thread has rendered
  2. Click the ModelAny tab on the right edge of the page
  3. Pick PDF, Word or Markdown—or Copy as Markdown for a straight paste
  4. The file downloads locally; nothing is uploaded

What no on-page exporter can do

An on-page exporter can only read what the page exposes. Images and file attachments may be omitted or replaced with a placeholder. Very long threads may need two passes. And because it renders the live page, a conversation you deleted from your account is not recoverable this way.

For the complete history of every chat in one request, use OpenAI’s own data export (Settings → Data controls → Export data). It is slower and arrives as data files, but it is the only route that covers everything at once.

Privacy: where the file is made matters

A browser-generated file never sends your conversation anywhere new—it moves from the page to your disk. A server-side exporter uploads the thread to a third party you did not originally share it with. If the conversation contains client material, credentials or personal data, that difference is the whole decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ChatGPT exporter the same as ChatGPT’s official data export?

No. An on-page exporter reads the conversation you have open and produces a formatted file immediately. OpenAI’s Export data (Settings → Data controls) emails you a ZIP of your whole history, arrives as raw data rather than a formatted document, and can take time to process.

Why does an exporter sometimes miss part of a long conversation?

Most on-page exporters read the turns that have rendered in the page. In a long thread that has not been scrolled to the top, older turns may not exist in the DOM yet. Scroll through the whole conversation before exporting.

Does ModelAny upload my conversations to export them?

No. The file is generated in your browser from the page you are viewing and saved to your downloads folder. Nothing is sent to a ModelAny server—ModelAny has no server that receives conversation content.

Can one exporter handle Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek too?

Some can. ModelAny uses the same right-edge toolbar across every supported AI site, so the steps do not change when you switch providers.
