Download a ChatGPT conversation to your computer

Get the chat off the website and onto your disk

Downloading a ChatGPT conversation means ending up with a file you control: a PDF for records, a Word document for editing, a Markdown file for notes tools. ChatGPT’s interface does not offer a per-chat download button, so the practical routes are a browser extension that generates the file from the open page, or OpenAI’s account-wide data export.

Where the file ends up

Browser downloads go to your default download folder (often ~/Downloads), named after the conversation. From there it is an ordinary file: move it into your archive, attach it, or commit it. The download is a copy—deleting the chat on ChatGPT afterwards does not touch your file, and vice versa.

File format vs account archive

The two routes answer different needs. A per-chat file is immediate, formatted and shareable; the account archive is complete but asynchronous, arrives as JSON/HTML data files, and includes more than chats. Most people use per-chat exports as they work and run an account export occasionally as a disaster-recovery net.

Privacy notes

The extension-generated download is produced locally after you click. The share-link route stores a copy on OpenAI’s servers until you delete the link. The official export goes from OpenAI to your email inbox.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download all my ChatGPT conversations at once?

Only through OpenAI’s own export: Settings → Data controls → Export data. It emails a ZIP containing your account history. ModelAny’s downloads are per chat, done deliberately, one conversation at a time.

Is the downloaded file the same as what is on screen?

It is a structured copy of the conversation turns—speaker order, lists and code blocks included. Page styling and images may differ from the live page; for an exact visual copy use the share-link print route.

Does downloading a chat require ChatGPT Plus?

No. Both the extension route and OpenAI’s data export work on free accounts.
