Export a ChatGPT conversation to PDF

A ChatGPT conversation you can attach, print and archive

A PDF is the format to reach for when a conversation is finished and needs to survive: email it to a colleague, print it for a file, or drop it into a folder of records. ChatGPT itself does not offer a per-chat PDF download, but there are three routes that work, and the fastest one takes a single click from the conversation page.

With ModelAny installed, open the conversation on ChatGPT, click the tab on the right edge of the page and choose PDF. The file is generated in your browser and downloads locally—nothing is uploaded to a ModelAny server. The same toolbar produces PDFs on Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and other supported sites.

Route 1: export to PDF from the page (fastest)

  1. Open the conversation in the ChatGPT web app and let the whole thread render (scroll to the top first)
  2. Click the ModelAny tab on the right edge of the page
  3. Choose PDF — the file is generated in your browser and your browser saves it to your download folder
  4. Check the result: each turn keeps its speaker order, and code stays in monospaced blocks

Open the conversation, use Share → Create link, then open that link and press Ctrl+P (⌘+P on Mac) and choose Save as PDF. This works without any extension, but the PDF is a print rendering: it can split awkwardly across pages and includes the page chrome. Use it as a fallback on machines where you cannot install extensions.

Route 3: OpenAI’s account data export

Settings → Data controls → Export data emails you a ZIP of your entire chat history. It is the only route that covers every chat at once, but it arrives as data files rather than formatted PDFs and can take time to process. Treat it as the archive of last resort, not a day-to-day export.

What the PDF keeps—and what it leaves out

The export renders the turns currently on the page in order, so scroll through the whole thread before exporting. Text, headings and code blocks carry over; images and uploaded attachments may be omitted or replaced with a placeholder, depending on what the page exposes. If a thread is very long, exporting in two passes (top half, then bottom) can beat one giant PDF.

Privacy notes

Route 1 generates the file in your browser and never uploads the chat. Route 2 publishes a share link on OpenAI’s servers—delete the link when you no longer need it. Route 3 sends your entire history to your own email address.
