Markdown is the right export format whenever the chat is going into a tool that ingests plain text: Notion pages, Obsidian vaults, Git repositories, static-site drafts. Headings, lists and code blocks survive the trip, quotes stay quoted, and the file diffs cleanly if you commit it.

What survives the trip

Speaker turns, headings, ordered and unordered lists, inline code and fenced code blocks are carried into the Markdown structure. Images and uploaded attachments may be omitted or become placeholders. Very long threads should be scrolled fully into view before exporting, because the export covers the turns rendered on the page.

The manual fallback, and why it disappoints

Selecting the whole thread and pressing Ctrl+C copies what the browser shows: it usually flattens headings, keeps or drops formatting unpredictably, and pastes differently into every target app. It is fine for one answer—the per-answer copy button on ChatGPT messages exists for exactly that—but for whole threads the structured export is faster to clean up.

The Markdown file is generated in your browser and saved locally. Copy as Markdown touches your clipboard only. Neither route uploads the conversation anywhere.

Can I get a .md file instead of copying to the clipboard?

Yes. Choose Markdown in the edge toolbar and the browser downloads a .md file; use Copy as Markdown only when you are pasting directly into another tool.

How do I move a ChatGPT chat into Obsidian or Notion?

Export the conversation to Markdown, then drop the .md file into your Obsidian vault or import it into Notion. Headings become note structure and code blocks stay intact, so cleanup is usually minimal.
